We hit our target of 40 composition-recordings last night with blonde guest Artika Bekvam providing her unique and important sense of what's right in a piece which truly indicates where where we're coming from as a project, as a people, and as a band: "Life without Music." Chatting over pastries Artika told Agent Q and me of the cheap Ontario government's budget cuts to music programs in high schools. We then speculated on the dismal prospect of a life without music and, immediately, this song came together in protest of any possible government bills which might very well be passed in the future, banning music. This one packs the protest punch of Sonny and Cher in their twin animal-pelt tunics. As a band, and a blog, Occupant must vote NO to the future ban on music. Are you with us? Vote yes. (And remember Vote No.) Or maybe we should ask the government to lift the existing ban on music, in case that's the reason were in such a mess. So in this case vote Yes, 'kay?
Then we had the contractual obligation of finishing 40 original tunes and wrote the tongue in cheek, anthemic "I love you" which is actually our way of flipping the bird at Sony (who provides the tape recorder for our sessions). Fuckin contracts man. Well - we wrote the thing and now we're free!
Now we are working on the first cover of our catalogue: Mother.
